1980 wine
By David Finters
I recently went to dinner to my father in law`s house. There were around twelve guests altogether, including my husband and I and it was a really grand affair. My husband`s parents have always entertained lavishly and, as both of them come from very upper middle class families, the standard of food and entertainment is always high. This particular evening my father in law served a 1984 wine with the food. He has a large wine cellar containing many bottles from many different years but, this particular evening he wanted to serve a 1984 wine with the meal that they had cooked. When I asked why he had been so insistent on serving a 1984 wine as opposed to one from any other year, his response surprised and touched me. He told me that 1984 was the year of the birth of his youngest son and, as such, was one of the happiest days in his life. He thought that this thought, coupled with a very good year in wine would make a very happy pairing for his latest entertaining event. I thought it was a splendid idea and I am sure that I enjoyed the wine more than if it did not have such a touching story attached to it.
